Happy Christmas! You have been given a place on LEARN TO SEW: Back to Basics for Christmas. This 5 module course will take you from clueless to confidently sewing projects in a matter of a few weeks….
We begin on 25th Jan 2023 for 6 weeks (with a break over half term.) If you are gift recipient, please could you email me [email protected] with your contact details so that I can add you to the mailing list for the course.
Read on for more info and see you in soon!
THE COURSE:
The course takes place over the space of 5 weeks with 6 zooms and begins with our first zoom on 23rd Jan 2023. You will be given early access to the first module from the 15th however and will have two weeks to work through that in your own time.
The material goes live each week starting on 15th Jan in your course account in the Start to Stitch Academy academy.starttostitch.com You will have access to this a few days before we begin when it will appear in your account.
If you have any problems - do give me a shout!
If you're on Facebook, please also click yourself into the course group if you haven't already done so https://www.facebook.com/groups/260506432784797 - this will be the place to network, ask questions etc!
PLEASE DO USE THE GROUP 😀. Ask questions, share your work, treat it like a safe place. I am a Facebook addict and my assistant Jackie will be in there as often as possible to support you whenever you need us to. I will go live in there every now and again to cheer you on too!
The actual taught material is all pre-recorded and can be accessed from your academy account any time after it has been uploaded. I will upload each session weekly, on a Wednesday and usually just before our zoom call, but sometimes earlier. You will have access to it for life.
There will be a weekly video call on each Wednesday at 8pm for about an hour., exclusively for those who have signed up for this cohort. This is so you can check in with me and each other and we can review what you found challenging or easy and celebrate each other's success! I can go over anything that is needed too, or add in extra training if it's needed as a result of this call.
The zoom calls are not compulsory - and you won't miss out on learning but please use them if you can - so much of what I try to do through my work is bring people together into a community and it's important to me that you don't feel on your own as you start this new sewing adventure.
The first video call - called a Bee Sewcial - will not be to review the material in its entirety as you'll only just have recently seen it but is a good chance to say hello to your fellow students and ask me any questions about how it all works.
The social side of these classes is a core part of what I do and I'd like to strongly encourage you to join in and say hello even if it is just for a few minutes - I have found that these weekly calls keep people motivated and it's a really good opportunity for some on the spot tuition too!
Zoom Call link for all modules :
You will need to register in advance using the following link:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcscuirqDkrEtLoFRoF0Hae4dWZV1XVsCTG
You will only need to register once to be able to join all the scheduled meetings. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meetings..
Recordings of these zooms will be uploaded to your Library for you to catch up on.
Updates and announcements will come via email - I will not be posting the zoom link in the Facebook Group but I will email out a reminder each week so please add me to your contacts so these do not end up in your Spam / Junk file.
COURSE EQUIPMENT (this is also attached as a document for you to print off below)
You should all have a sewing machine - if it's an old one and hasn't been used recently I would really recommend that you get it serviced as it will help you as a beginner to know that your machine is operating as it should. Contact your local sewing shop for advice or ask me if you're in Cornwall and I can recommend.
Please can you let me know the make and model of your machine in case I need to help you remotely during the length of the course.
You will need a few things to get started too..
1) A decent pair of fabric scissors
2) Pins
3) An iron!!! I will say this a LOT but if you own a sewing machine you MUST own an iron. The two go hand in hand... for this course, if you don't own one, please try to borrow one from somewhere - you will understand why as we go!
I have recently added a kit store for course participants in my shop The Joyful Sewing Boutique. Scissors, pins, tape measures and other tools and equipment can be found here, and they are only things I would, and DO, use myself.
I have set up a 10% discount for students on my course, on items purchased from the Kit Store - just enter the code B2BKIT at checkout.
Please note that this code can only be used once per customer.

COURSE MATERIALS
Finally - the fun bit! Fabric... (fabric buying is a whole hobby in itself)
You will need some bits and pieces to sew and learn on and make your projects each week. I will do a video about the ins and outs of fabric as you all add yourself into the facebook group,
The list is as follows but please bear in mind that as beginners you need really stable fabrics - so just using odds and sods around the house, while perhaps more environmentally sound, will not help you as you learn. I can not stress this enough!
5 x coordinating Fat Quarters of quilting weight 100% cotton ( A fat quarter is a specific cut size of cloth, your fabric shop will explain but there is a video on youtube for you to watch which explains visually.)
1/2 m medium weight calico
1/2 m something off the roll - a stable woven cotton like quilters cotton is ideal or a light weight furnishing / curtain weight cotton ( NO VELVET or FLOCK or anything like that - keep it simple for your first go! )
a4 sized piece of light weight iron on interfacing
1 piece of contrasting but co-ordinating felt ( A5 sized )
1/2 m piece of bias binding
1/2 m 5mm ribbon
50cm x 50 cm of medium light weight wadding
Toy stuffing
Sewing thread - a roll of moon thread is ideal.
It's a lot of info - but do email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.
I simply can't wait to get started.... the first thing to do is add yourself into the Facebook Group. Here's the link again: https://www.facebook.com/groups/260506432784797
Do shout if you have any questions at all, and thanks for booking onto this course which I hope you will love doing as much as I love teaching it!
