Sewing Classes with a difference
Start to stitch is a series of online sewing courses and pop up sewing classes & workshops in the St Agnes area of Cornwall designed to build your sewing confidence and skills in a friendly, fuss free and fun way. Community underpins everything we do, and when you join a Start to Stitch class you are sure to make new friends as well as learn a practical, creative and lifelong skill. The pop up nature of our classes ensures they are relaxed and friendly... basically we come, we sew, we drink tea, we go!
We offer a wide range of courses including beginners, refreshers and onwards, sewing for interiors, dressmaking, pattern drafting, alterations, up-cycling, sewing for men, and much more. It's really sociable, loads of fun and you will always leave equipped to carry on at home in your own time, with on going support through our online stitching community and exclusive access to expert tips and advice too. We teach you on your machine if you have one, but we always have spares if you don't!
Our new online courses ensure that you aren't kept from your sewing during these Pandemic times - currently we are running both our beginners and intermediate classes online with many other free workshops available including bunting making, and rather topically, make your own cloth mask or scrubs!
Through our project #KernowSewcial we organise regular social meet-ups so you can hang out with your new sewing buddies away from the (occasional) stress of a button hole or zip insertion, and a huge reason for our existence is to create a strong community of like minded sewists forging friendships alongside their growing skills and new hobby.

I’ve just finished the weekend beginners course and I loved every moment of it.
I never thought that in 48 hours I’d go from awkwardly trying to operate a sewing machine to feeling confident enough to want to try some simple dress making.
Annie is a fantastic teacher who models the different techniques to the class whilst explaining in clear steps. I cannot wait to go back and do more with her.
Thank you Annie.

Sewist in Chief
Hello! I'm Annie Lucas, an award winning bridal & costume designer and passionate sewing teacher.
I trained as a costume designer at Central St Martins and London College of Fashion, and I began teaching 6 years ago after the birth of my first daughter. It gives me such a buzz to share a skill that brings so much to my life, and to empower my students to love their machines, have their own ideas and express themselves with their new found skills. Read my full story here. |
CORNWALL SCRUBS
While we were in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, Start to Stitch was proud to be leading the charge with a team of incredible volunteers all mobilising their sewing machines to make scrubs for our Health Care Workers.
I have written the story of this strange adventure down on the blog - have a read! I am truly humbled by the huge army of stitchers coming together to be a force for good. I will never, ever forget it. |
