I just asked the members of my sewing community...

'what is the ONE thing that would have given you confidence when you started your sewing journey?'

Do you know what they pretty much all said?

'Doing a course like YOURS'

What will I learn?

Learn to sew : Back to basics is a comprehensive online sewing course with 66 sewing video tutorials, detailed hand outs, live support and weekly video conferencing with me - award winning bridal designer and sewing tutor Annie Lucas.

You will learn:
  • how to thread
  • sew straight lines and curves
  • adjust machine tension
  • know which sewing needle to use, when (and how to change it)
  • all about grain...
...as well as more advanced techniques such as French seams, applique, using bias binding, and much more!

You will make 5 easy sewing projects over the course and it will set you up to experiment with projects of your own for confident solo sewing!
From a simple pin cushion - to a string of bunting, the projects are fun, practical, giftable and clearly explained for maximum learning.

Embedded within them are all the skills and technical knowledge that you will need for your future sewing adventures.

It is truly a foundational sewing course and even a seasoned sewist will find there is something to learn.

Weekly zoom calls are not compulsory (and are recorded for catch up) but provide a perfect opportunity to get 1:1 support and ask all the questions you may have of our expert tutor!
This sounds amazing! Teach me please!
What’s great about your course is that you break it down into such manageable chunks. It’s so digestible and so clear. You also explain the WHY behind how to do things which makes it much easier to understand.

- Poppy N

How does it work?

The course is hosted in a dedicated digital academy with all lessons yours for your lifetime.  You can follow through in your own time with the pre-recorded videos and check in in-person to our regular weekly group video calls or monthly thereafter for anyone who has questions about their current module.

Participants share work, support each other and ask questions and support is offered speedily by tutor Annie who checks in with the group throughout the week.

Each session introduces a series of skills which are worked into a project - practical, useful and good enough to give to friends and family!

Week 1:  Get to know your machine - threading, tension and more, sewing in a straight line - make a pincushion
Week 2: Sewing curves - make a padded heart decoration
Week 3: Seaming and edging techniques - make a french seamed cushion cover
Week 4: Applique and bias binding - make your own bunting
Week 5: Inserting a lining into a 3D Object - make a mug cosy

What will I make?

Hello!  I'm Annie Lucas, an award winning bridal & costume designer and passionate sewing teacher.

I trained as a costume designer at Central St Martins and London College of Fashion, and I began teaching 6 years ago after the birth of my first daughter.

It gives me such a buzz to share a skill that brings so much to my life, and to empower my students to love their machines, have their own ideas and express themselves with their new found skills.
Liberate that sewing machine from its place under the stairs and Start to Stitch!
I'd love to do this - how much is it?

FAQ'S:

Do I have to start the course on the officIal start date?

No, not at all!  All of the taught material is pre-recorded and you get a lifetime access so you can start whenever you like.

I can't attend the zooms - doeS this matter?

No, not at all!  Because all of the taught material is pre-recorded you won't miss out by not attending them.  The zooms will be drop in from the 28th April meaning you get lifetime access to tutor support along with your lifetime access to the course!

What materials do I need?

A comprehensive materials list is emailed to you upon booking - and I have buddied up with the fabulous Sew and Fabric in St Austell, Cornwall, UK, who provides course packs for £28 by mail order.  There are few bits of essential equipment but they don't have to be expensive and all can be borrowed.  There is nothing specialist or unusual!

I like to learn in Person - do you teach face to face?

Covid has brought us many things and my online version of this sell out course is one of them! It is actually a vast improvement on the face-to face because you can go over and over the lessons in your own time, as many times as you like, while still having the opportunity to get to know sewists from all over the world in our zoom calls!

I will be running face to face sessions at some point - but this course and they quality of what you learn in it, which is foundational to all future sewing projects, is MUCH better in this format and ALL of my students who have attended will agree!

Does it matter if I start  late?

Absolutely not!  There is no time to start - just start when you want to and hop onto the odd zoom if you can... Annie will always respond to queries and questions is happy to help whenever it is needed!

I don't have a facebook account - does this matter?

Nope! If you don't have a Facebook account you just miss out on the closed group for sharing work - you can still share on the zoom's - or email your makes directly to Annie!
Your question not here ... ?
